ADDITIONAL RULES REGARDING VOCAL SOLO CLASSES

 

  1. In competitive classes, students must select one age level for entry, and then enter ALL competitive classes at the same level
  2. All selections accompanied by live music.   The term “accompanied” shall be held to mean the use of one piano only.  A possible exception would be the use of a guitar accompaniment in the Folksong and the Folk Ballad Classes. These two classes may be sung unaccompanied as in the true traditional style.
  3. To qualify for a Festival award or Provincial recommendation, a solo competitor must enter 2 solo classes and receive a minimum of 85% on each soloParticipants are not limited to 2 solos.
  4. There is no age limit to enter Senior or Open Classes. In accordance with Provincial Festival competition, Senior classes shall be defined as 28 and under, Intermediate -18 and under, and Junior -14 and under.

       

VOCAL CLASSES

SINGER/SONGWRITER

Each entry must be composed by, written out or computer-generated by the entrant. The work may be performed by the composer or by a performer of his/her choice who is within the same age category/grouping.  The composer must be present for the adjudication.

Entries must be neat and legible in ink, computer print, or photocopy.  The measure number starting each line, tempo and dynamic markings and other appropriate details should be included.

A copy of the composition MUST be in the hands of the Board by February 1st via mail, email (info.nifpa@gmail.com) or in person.

It is advisable to retain a copy of the submitted work.

        CANADIAN ART SONG

                    8 & under – 18 & under

        CONTEMPORARY SOLO – ALL AGES

                    Your choice of a contemporary song in the Pop idiom

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ART SONG

                    8 & under – 18 & under

        ITALIAN LANGUAGE ART SONG or ARIA

                    8 & under – 18 & under

        FOREIGN LANGUAGE ART SONG

                    8 & under – 18 & under

        SACRED SONG – ALL AGES

                    One Selection, Own choice (excludes Oratorio and Cantata)   


SOLO CLASSES – 19 YEARS AND OVER

GRADE A – for an established Festival competitor – Only a Grade A competitor is eligible to be chosen to proceed to the Provincial Festival as a competitor.  Any voice

GRADE B – for a novice/newcomer or first-time entrant – A competitor may only enter a Grade B class for two years.   Any voice


PERFORMANCE GROUP CLASSES

This is an opportunity to perform 3 solos back to back.  Competitors will be adjudicated & marked for each solo.

                    Performance Group, Intermediate                                                                             

Three songs, own selection

Time limit:  15 minutes

                    Performance Group, Grade A, Senior, Open                                                               

Three songs, own selection

Time limit:  15 minutes

                    Performance Group, Grade B, Senior, Open                                                               

Two songs, own selection

Time limit:  10 minutes


FOLKSONGS – TRADITIONAL/CONTEMPORARY – ALL AGES

Many of the folk songs have numerous verses, 3 or 4 well-chosen ones will be sufficient for performance at the Festival. If language other than English is used, an English translation must be given to the Adjudicator. Folksongs may be sung unaccompanied or accompanied. Any voice


VOCAL ENSEMBLE CLASSES – ALL AGES

Duets, Trios or larger groups will be divided when number of entries allows.   


CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE CLASSES– ALL AGES

Duets, Trios or larger groups will be subdivided when number of entries allows.


CHURCH, SCHOOL or COMMUNITY CHOIRS & BARBERSHOP QUARTETS

All choirs and Barbershop Quartets are requested to perform two selections in contrasting styles.
